Wacana Rakyat: Adakah Polis Pembela Rakyat?

Panelis:

1. Mahfuz Omar (Ahli Parlimen Pokok Sena, Naib Presiden PAS Pusat)

2. Ong Chin Wen (ADUN Bukit Tengah, Naib Ketua AMK Pulau Pinang)

Teoh Beng Hock's body was found on the morning of 17 July 2009 below the 14th floor window of the Selangor MACC office in Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam. A purported suicide note by Beng Hock emerged at the eleventh hour of the inquest into his death. Interests were also generated internationally by the MACC counsel for his comical (and nationally embarassing) line of questioning during the inquest.

Will Teoh Beng Hock get justice and will the real truth on the cause of his death be uncovered?

Introduction

For some time now, Pakatan Rakyat has been talking about their effort to steer the country to genuine democracy, justice, freedom and the rule of law. In December last year, the Opposition Coalition took one decisive, deliberate and historic step to free our country from the consequences of BN misrule via a joint agreement to a Common Policy Framework that was launched at the coalition's historic inaugural convention on December 19th at Auditorium MBSA, Shah Alam.

The CPF, prepared by Zaid Ibrahim, Pakatan Rakyat's policy coordinator, will be the compass and guiding light to the coalition in their effort to reach and touch the hearts and minds of Malaysians to convince them that they are sincere in their effort to check the downward spiralling trend of Malaysia if and when they succeed in winning the next election.

The coalition recognizes that many still Malaysians still fall prey to BN’s propaganda to promote a narrow understanding of race, divisive hate politics and authoritarianism. The recessive economy, the loss of moral conscience coupled with the greed of corruption and archaic policies have caused Malaysia to lag behind compared to other vibrant economies in the region. With that, the gap between the haves and have-nots and between the Peninsular and Sabah and Sarawak have widened even further.

Through the Common Policy Framework, Pakatan Rakyat has publicly announced their commitment to fully internalise and carry out an agenda of new politics by mobilizing the people’s power from the various races, religions and cultures as one force.

You can read a summary of the Common Policy Framework in a separate posting below.

Many Malaysians are still unclear about the Common Policy Framework.  As such, Sembang-sembang Forum is organizing a forum to help Malaysians to understand the Common Policy Framework.

Please come early to get a seat. This forum is open to everyone. Admission is free.

Introduction

The two decades between 1945 to 1965 was an extraordinary era of political turmoil in the modern history of modern Malaya and Singapore. Dr. Lim Hock Siew, a founding member of the Barisan Sosialist was arrested under Operation Cold Storage for opposing the PAP Government on Feb 2 1963. He was detained for 19 years 8 months, making him the second longest held political prisoner in Singapore. (The longest prisoner of conscience in Singapore was Chia Thye Poh who served 23 years in prison and 9 years under house arrest, longer than Nelson Mandela). A total of 133 persons were arrested under Operations Cold Storage. Other Opposition leaders that were detained were Said Zahari (17 years), Dr. Poh Soo Kai (16 years), the late Ho Piao (19 years) and the late James Puthucheary (5 years). The clampdown continued later with the arrest of trade unionists like Tan Jing Quee.

The Fajar Generation tells the neglected story of this group of remarkable men and women who advanced a radical agenda of anti-colonialism, democracy, multi-culturalism and social justice through the agenda of the University of Malaya Socialist Club. Their stories remind us of how much of that progressive political agenda is still to be won in contemporary Malaysia and Singapore.

Welcome to a talk and book launch on the real anti-colonial struggle. Hear the personal stories of the trials and tribulations of these champions of anti-colonialism and nationalism. Listen to how they survive years of incarceration and solitary confinement. Come and listen to that part of history that was seldom told.

Press Release:The two-party system signifies a more mature democracy

Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has been appointed as the coordinator of Pakatan Rakyat to form a formal coalition for the Pakatan.

The formation of Pakatan Rakyat as a legal entity will mark the beginning of a two-party system in Malaysia. There will emerge a multiracial mass-based political coalition capable of challenging and replacing the Barisan National as the government of Malaysia.

Such a two-party system will offer a more level field for political competition in Malaysia, provide better representation of the interests of the rakyat, expand the democratic spaces necessary to protect of the rights of the people, and at the same time force the implementation of the much overdue reforms in the Barisan National which has so far refused to listen to the people as it holds on to its monopoly of power at the central level.

We see the efforts of Datuk Zaid Ibrahim in forming a legal entity for Pakatan Rakyat as a first step towards the realization of the two-party System for Malaysia. We have therefore asked him to speak to us about his work and his vision of the two-party system of Malaysia.

We keenly look forward to your participation in this coming forum.

Thank you.

Press conference: Launching of Sembang-sembang forum

Press Release For Sembang-Sembang Forum by YB Sim Tze Tzin (Adun, Pantai Jerejak)
12 Sep 09

Selamat pagi dan selamat datang.
And first of all thank you saudara, saudari for attending this press conference.
This Press Conference is called to announce that I am going to start organizing a series of talks and Forums in my constituency of Pantai Jerejak. This will be a regular program taking place on every first Sunday of each month. It will be called The Sembang-Sembang Forum.
Sembang-Sembang means having casual conversations. In the process we like to offer a platform where all are welcome to participate as we would sit down and chat in coffee shops.
Issues for Discussion
We would like to discuss social issues we face daily. Many such issues have surfaced recently as our society is going through rapid changes. Our society is in a state of transition.
We would like to understand these issues better. One of the best way to achieve this is to hear directly from persons involved and to ask them questions. Each forum session will have invited speakers well-versed with the topical subject of interest. After hearing from the speakers participants will be invited to ask questions and they can also offer their views and suggestion on the subject being addressed.
The Outcome We Want to Achieve
This free flow of exchanging ideas will help us achieve a better understanding of the issues. We also hope that this process will promote mutual understanding amongst the different ethnic communities within Malaysia.
We also feel that such social issues can be better understood if we examine these issues through a free and open discussion as we are a multi-racial, multi-religious, multi-cultural and multi-sectoral society.
Through attaining a common understanding on such social issues, we hope that a consensus can be reached and any proposed solutions can be acceptable to most, if not all, Malaysians.
Siapa yang sembang? Who should sembang?
All. The rakyat, the community, the non-governmental organisations, the experts in various fields, the government authorities, and the prominent leaders of our country.
We hope to give everyone concerned a voice in this forum.
Mari-lah sembang-sembang! Come, let's sembang!
Let us better understand one another so that we can build a Malaysia that is just, democratic, progressive and united.
Announcing the First Sembang Session
I have pleasure in announcing our first Sembang Sembang Forum to be held at PISA, Function Room on 4 Oct 2009 (Sunday) at 2 pm. The Topic is “All you need to know about A(H1N1) ”. The speakers are:
1. Dr Chan Chee Khoon, Epidemiologist ,Universiti Sains Malaysia,
