Forum Report: Perak Crisis - Lessons for a 2 Party System

The forum organized by the Penang PKR Biro Komunikasi attracted a full capacity crowd of 800+ people. Some of the audience came from as far as Perak. The forum was held in the Bosch Hall in the Kompleks Penyayang in Jalan Utama, Penang. The DCM of Penang, Dato Mansor Othman delivered the welcome speech and the event was chaired and moderated by YB Sim Tze Tzin, the Adun for Pantai Jerejak.

YB Nizar was warmly welcomed by the audience when he walked into the hall. He started off his talk by recounting the happenings of the night of March 08 2008 in Perak. He related some amusing anecdotes of the "Reluctant Mentri Besar" when all the five PAS Aduns were reluctant to accept the post of Mentri Besar of Perak. All felt that they do not have the experience to take up the position. In contrast, YB Nizar pointed out, there were many politicians in other political parties who are willing to pay millions of ringgit just to be in the game of getting nominated for division positions. YB Nizar then went on to give his personal account of events following the night of March 08. He shared his account of the grabbing of power by Barisan National, behind the scenes happenings in the palace and the on-going “MB vs MB” judicial reviews. He pledged that should Pakatan Rakyat wins the judicial review, he would seek the Sultan's permission to dissolve the Perak state assembly and call for a fresh State election. Nizar message to the audience was that politics of race and religion and politics of hate must be rejected by the Rakyat. He also said that the Perak Pakatan Rakyat has emerged much stronger and cohesive after the power grab. The forum ended past 11.00pm after the Q&A session. YB Nizar was given a standing ovation at the end of the night. One of the main take-away message that YB Nizar sent out that night was his recital of a verse from the holy Quran:

O mankind! Be careful of your duty to your Lord Who created you from a single soul and from it created its mate and from them has spread a multitude of men and women.

YB Nizar reminded the audience that all Man are born equal and we do not have a choice to choose the colour of our skin when we are born.

 Sembang Group notes:
Many people have come to ask the Sembang Group to organise more talks. There is a dearth of good and engaging fora on current issues held in Penang. The Sembang Forum group has come up with a list of interesting topics and speakers for next year. We are working on the list and are inviting these speakers. We welcome inputs and suggestions for topics and speakers via the comments section below.
